The little known beauty of Slipper Island

At this time of the year, most of New Zealand is looking for a good holiday spot and if the place has a campground to offer then it’s even better. But most places are pre-booked or has a lot of crowd pulled to itself. Getting a peaceful and serene campground for cheap is next to impossible.

There is, however, one place in New Zealand you can enjoy the beautiful nature and camping – the Slipper Island.  Three kilometres to the coast of Coromandel, this secret island provides an ideal attraction for camping. Enjoy the white sandy beaches on the western and southern sides or if you dare, the rocky cliffs and the awe-inspiring volcanic rocks.

For those who love the cool and calm nature, this Island is to offer it’s not even expensive; unless you stay in a luxurious resort, for a meagre 15$ per person for a night, you can get a wonderful camping experience.

The route to Slipper Island

A 15-min water taxi from the Coromandel coast, it’s one of the few known secret islands of New Zealand. The reason for this is that most people don’t know much about it. Perhaps The other reason is perhaps when it’s booked by some guests, only to themselves.

To Buckle up or not; when in taxi

In May 2015 in New Jersey, one of America’s most notable mathematician and Nobel Prize-winning economist John F. Nash Jr. and his wife Alicia lost their lives in a road accident. John and his wife were sitting in the backseat of their taxi while going back home from the airport.

The airport taxi crashed into a guardrail and it has been reported by the state police that neither of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.  As a result, they were thrown off the car upon impact.

In New Zealand its mandatory for the driver to make sure all the passengers, under 15 years of age, are wearing safety belts. Children between the age of 8 to 14 years must use safety belts if available; if not, they must travel in the back seat.

Researchers show a higher rate of negligence when it comes to wearing the seatbelt while in a taxi. While some people think it’s trivial, others hold on to the opinion that it’s only necessary for the front seat passengers.

But taking note of the tragic incident above, whether you are in the front seat or back seat of the car, whether it’s a taxi or your pal’s car, wearing a seatbelt is highly effective against serious injuries during an accident.

In some countries, the law is at leisure to the taxi drivers and passengers for using safety belts. A research finding shows only 38-40% of passengers wear a seatbelt while riding in a taxi.

The research explaining why people are more reluctant to do so is either they don’t have the habit of using seat belts or because they think it would be uncool or unnecessary to wear one for a busy urban street.

Emphasising the need for safe travelling, researchers and policymakers are of the view that wearing a seatbelt should be part of our habit rather than a decision or a choice.

A tale of two centuries: A short story of New Zealand’s Taxi Service

From horse-drawn hansom cabs to the modern taxi of the new millennium the with their GPS receivers and satellite tracking, taxis and cabs have long been a feature of New Zealand’s cities. Many new immigrants have made a living driving taxis.

Hansom Cab

In the mid1800’s in Britain, when Joseph Hansom invented the safe hansom cab it wasn’t much later when people started using it in New Zealand. Also mentioned in the famous detective novels of Sherlock Holmes, this carriage carried two persons on a horse-drawn cart. These horse-drawn cabs started operating in the New Zealand’s cities as early as the 1860’s. A cab driver would require a driving license from the local authorities.

You might have heard of the best-selling crime novel “The mystery of a hansom cab”, set in the late 19th century written and self-published by Fergus Hume, it became an international best-seller.

Taxi

The handsome cabs made way for motor taxis not until the beginning of 20th Century. According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, the first Motor Taxi appeared around 1905. However, it wasn’t until 1912 when they became common in the cities of New Zealand. To get a taxi, special phones were installed on poles in different cities.

Govt. Control

Towards the end of the 20th Century, due to law and order situations caused by taxis, Government started to control the taxi industry. Licenses and fares were now regulated by the government. This made the job for taxi drivers really difficult, hence new immigrants started to fill in and take the opportunity. To this day the taxi industry is mainly run by migrants.

GPS & Tracking

The 21st century heralded a new age of taxi industry across the globe, many countries including New Zealand has a modern GPS & Tracking Taxi service. It has become extremely easy for the masses to avail a taxi service at their fingertips. Safety & reliable journey has become available to everyone at their doorstep, thanks to the internet and GPS technology.
